Get Help in the Down Economy with Family Budgeting

Date Posted: 01/22/2012 By: Joe Bencar

We all know that the economy has been in shambles for some time now, and we’re all feeling it. This especially goes for young families with newborns and toddlers. What you may not know is that a recent study was given to 1,900 pregnant and first-time moms, and researchers found when it comes to buying things for baby, no expense was spared.

Many moms and dads want to show their love for their new bundle of joy by showering them with gifts, clothes, toys, and more. Although this seems like a good idea to show your love, it may put your family in financial trouble.

Almost 74% of the moms surveyed told researchers that they were cutting back on the family budget, while only 13% would do so with baby items! There are so many options for young mothers and fathers to save on these baby items. Some of these options include refraining from purchasing expensive name-brand clothing, buying too many toys, doing research before making a purchase, and buying larger items that are gently-used.

iVillage recently released an article stating 40 different ways to save on baby gear. We wanted to bullet point some of the best advice we found as well as add our two cents.
  • Never buy baby gear at full price – Personally you shouldn't really buy anything full price (there are a few things you might have to, but the majority of purchases can be saved on).  You should always look for sales, coupons, and clearance for baby gear. Or if you really want to save some money, buy gently used!
  • Practicality in your Registry – Baby showers and friends’ generosity are wonderful. Make sure that you make the most of this by registering for things that you really need and that you are able to use for a while. Super cute name brand outfits are nice, but you will be able to save some major cash by avoiding things like this.
  • Consider all Diaper options – Cloth diapers are definitely worth considering. Consumer Reports said that you can expect to spend $1500 - $2500 on disposable diapers by the time your child is potty trained. By using cloth diapers and cloth diaper alternatives, you can save a pretty penny.
  • Turn household items into toys – If you have had kids long enough to experience Christmas, then you probably have seen them pay more attention to the big boxes than the expensive toys that came in those boxes. Kids and babies can be entertained with a wide variety of items. Get creative and save some money by using household items like pots and pans for drums. You will be amazed!
When you think about it, babies grow too fast and lose interest in things too quickly to over-buy clothes, toys, etc. Here at RockaBuyGear, we try and help families save by offering a free and easy way to buy and sell baby items online. Take advantage of this resource and start getting your family on the right financial track!
